Julien Alfred was born on 10 June 2001 in the Ciceron community of Castries, Saint Lucia, and lost her father, Julian Hamilton, when she was 12, an experience she has spoken about with deep emotion throughout her career, growing up training barefoot on the field in her school uniform. Alfred won her first international medal at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games, and silver at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, dedicating the medal to her late father and aunt, before moving to the University of Texas, where she became a three-time NCAA champion. Alfred won gold in the 60m at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Saint Lucia's first-ever World Athletics medal, before delivering the defining moment of her career at the 2024 Paris Olympics, upsetting reigning world champion Sha'Carri Richardson to win the 100m in a national record of 10.72 seconds. Alfred's victory was Saint Lucia's first Olympic medal in any sport, and she added silver in the 200m at the same Games, returning home to a hero's welcome and being honoured with a diplomatic passport by her national government, remaining one of the most inspiring stories in recent Olympic history.
