Few WTA players have confounded expectations quite like Jessica Pegula, who dismissed the noise surrounding her family's billionaire ownership of the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres to reach world No. 3 and win the 2024 Canadian Open as one of the tour's most tenacious and consistent competitors. Despite her family's wealth, Pegula has said her upbringing was relatively normal, laughing off rumours that she travels with a private chauffeur or butler. She began playing tennis at seven and turned professional in 2009. Pegula's rise through the WTA rankings was gradual — she has described herself as something of a "late bloomer" — before a breakthrough run to the quarter-finals of the 2021 Australian Open, defeating former world No. 5 Elina Svitolina, launched the most successful stretch of her career. She reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 3 in October 2022.
