Frances Tiafoe was born on January 20, 1998, in Hyattsville, Maryland, along with his twin brother Franklin, to Constant and Alphina Tiafoe, immigrants who had fled the civil war in Sierra Leone in the 1990s. His father worked as head of maintenance at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, Maryland, often sleeping in a spare office at the facility with his sons, while his mother worked night shifts as a nurse — sacrifices that gave the twins free access to tennis courts from age four while avoiding less safe neighbourhoods. Tiafoe won the 2013 Orange Bowl at 15, becoming the tournament's youngest-ever boys' singles champion, and turned professional in 2015, developing into one of the most athletic and charismatic American players of his generation.
