Jermell DeAvante Charlo was born on 19 May 1990 in Lafayette, Louisiana, one minute after his identical twin brother Jermall, and raised alongside him in Houston, Texas, where both attended Alief Hastings High School. The brothers began boxing after following their father, a former boxer, into the gym, with Jermell winning a bronze medal at the 2005 Junior Olympics at just 15 and finishing his amateur career with 56 wins against eight losses. Charlo turned professional in 2007 and developed into one of the finest light middleweights of his generation, becoming a two-time world champion at 154 pounds. In 2022, he defeated Brian Castaño in a rematch to become the first undisputed light middleweight champion of the four-belt era, unifying the WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO titles. Charlo held the undisputed championship until 2023, and moved up in weight to challenge pound-for-pound star Canelo Álvarez for the undisputed super middleweight title later that year, losing by unanimous decision in a significant step up in competition. Charlo, nicknamed "Iron Man," has continued competing at world level alongside his twin brother Jermall, the pair remaining one of the most accomplished sets of siblings in the history of professional boxing, both having reached the summit of their respective weight divisions.
