Jade Bridget Clarke was born on 17 October 1983 in Manchester. She began playing netball at nine at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School, developing through Trafford and Oldham Netball Club under coach Mike Greenwood before being selected for England's senior squad in 2002 and making her Test debut in 2003 against New Zealand. A relentless midcourt defender who played mainly centre and wing defence, Clarke went on to compete at six Netball World Cups (2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023) and four Commonwealth Games (2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018), winning World Cup bronze in 2015 and helping England to their historic first-ever Commonwealth Games gold on the Gold Coast in 2018. She captained England to the 2011 World Netball Series title, and on 25 January 2023 became only the second player in history, after Irene van Dyk, to reach 200 international caps. Clarke's domestic career took her to eight clubs across England, New Zealand and Australia, including Loughborough Lightning, Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, Northern Mystics, Canterbury/Mainland Tactix, NSW Swifts and Adelaide Thunderbirds, before returning to England for Wasps Netball (winning the 2018 Superleague title), Leeds Rhinos Netball and London Pulse, reaching the 2023 Superleague Grand Final as runners-up. She played her farewell international tournament at the 2023 World Cup in Cape Town, where England won silver, before retiring with 200 caps. She was appointed MBE in the 2023 New Year Honours and inducted into the England Netball Hall of Fame in 2014.
