Hamish Fergus Wallace Watson was born on 15 October 1991 in Manchester, England, and attended Terra Nova School, where he won the English schools boys' national under-13 trophy, before moving to Oakham School and joining the Leicester Tigers academy. Despite being born and schooled entirely in England, Watson qualifies for Scotland through his Glaswegian grandparents and grew up a passionate Scotland supporter, hanging a Saltire flag on his bedroom wall from the age of eight. Watson moved to Edinburgh in 2011 for a central Scotland Sevens contract, and was subsequently approached by Edinburgh Rugby's elite development programme, signing his first senior deal in 2014. He made his Scotland debut in the 2015 Six Nations, and developed into one of the most relentless and disruptive opensides in world rugby, earning the nickname "Pinball" for his bouncing, high-energy running style. Watson was named Six Nations Player of the Championship in 2021, and was selected for the British and Irish Lions' tour of South Africa that same year, making his Test debut off the bench in the series opener in Cape Town. Watson made over 100 appearances for Edinburgh across 15 seasons before a loan move to Leicester Tigers in 2026, returning to the club where his professional journey had begun 16 years earlier. He remains one of Scotland's most capped and consistently excellent forwards of the modern era.
