Gareth Thomas was born on 25 July 1974 in Bridgend, Wales, and became one of the most capped and versatile players in Welsh rugby history, equally effective at wing, centre or full-back across a 100-cap international career. He captained Wales to the 2005 Grand Slam, their first in 27 years, and represented the British and Irish Lions on three tours. In December 2009, shortly before retiring from union to play rugby league for Crusaders, Thomas publicly came out as gay, becoming the first openly gay professional rugby player in the world — a landmark moment that made him one of the most significant figures in the sport's history off the field as well as on it. He has since become a prominent campaigner against homophobia in sport and, in 2019, revealed he was HIV-positive to prevent a tabloid from outing him, using the disclosure to challenge stigma around the condition.
