Gavin Hastings was a prolific goal-kicking fullback who captained both Scotland and the British & Irish Lions during the early 1990s.

Andrew Gavin Hastings OBE was born on 3 January 1962 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and attended George Watson's College before studying at Cambridge University and Paisley College of Technology. He developed into one of the finest full-backs Scottish rugby has produced, renowned for his powerful goal-kicking and commanding presence in open play. Hastings made his Scotland debut in 1986 and went on to earn 61 caps, 20 of them as captain, becoming the country's all-time leading points scorer during his career. He was selected for the British and Irish Lions on two tours, playing all three Tests in the 1989 series win over Australia and captaining the side on the 1993 tour of New Zealand, scoring 38 points across that series despite the Lions narrowly losing 2-1. Hastings played his club rugby for Watsonians, London Scottish, and Cambridge University, and formed a celebrated on-field partnership with his brother Scott, the pair becoming the first set of brothers to tour together on two separate Lions tours. After retiring from rugby union, Hastings briefly played American football for the Scottish Claymores, winning the World Bowl in 1996. He has since built an extensive career in rugby broadcasting and remains widely regarded as one of the greatest players in Scottish rugby history.
