Gaël Sébastien Monfils was born on 1 September 1986 in Paris, France, and emerged as one of the most dominant junior players in tennis history, winning three of the four Grand Slam junior titles in 2004 — the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon — and finishing that year ranked world No. 1 in junior tennis, narrowly missing the calendar-year junior Grand Slam after a third-round US Open loss while carrying an injury.
