Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is a French former professional tennis player who reached the 2008 Australian Open final and helped France win the 2017 Davis Cup.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was born on 17 April 1985 in Le Mans, France, to Didier Tsonga, who hails from the Republic of the Congo and played handball, and Evelyne Tsonga, a French teacher. He turned professional in 2004 and developed into one of the most powerful and explosive attacking players of his generation, renowned for an aggressive all-court game built around a thunderous serve and forehand. Tsonga's breakthrough came at the 2008 Australian Open, where, as an unseeded player, he defeated a string of higher-ranked opponents to reach his first and only Grand Slam final, ultimately losing to Novak Djokovic. He reached a career-high ranking of world No. 5 in February 2012, and reached Wimbledon semi-finals in both 2011 and 2012. Tsonga won 18 ATP Tour singles titles across his career, including two Masters 1000 events, and was a key figure in France's victorious 2017 Davis Cup campaign, helping the country win the title for the first time in 16 years. He also won the Hopman Cup with France in 2014. Tsonga retired in 2022, and later reflected candidly, alongside fellow French great Gaël Monfils on Monfils's podcast, that neither man had won a Grand Slam singles title simply because the dominant "Big Four" generation of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray were better players during their shared era — a frank assessment of one of the most talented generations in French tennis history that nonetheless fell short of the sport's biggest prizes.
