Gabriela Sabatini was born on 16 May 1970 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She turned professional in 1985 aged 14 and quickly rose to become one of the world's elite players. She reached the Wimbledon final in 1991 and the US Open final in 1988, winning the US Open in 1990 — her only Grand Slam singles title. She also won the Olympic silver medal at the 1988 Seoul Games. Known for her devastating two-handed backhand, graceful movement and stunning appearance, she became one of tennis's great global icons. She retired in 1996 and launched a successful perfume brand.
