François "Faf" de Klerk was born on 19 October 1991 in Nelspruit (now Mbombela), South Africa, and attended Hoërskool Waterkloof in Pretoria, idolising Springbok scrum-half legend Joost van der Westhuizen, whose combative style he would later be seen to emulate. After missing out on a contract with the Blue Bulls, he attended the University of Johannesburg on a scholarship before breaking into Super Rugby with the Lions in 2014, winning Man of the Match in just his second appearance. De Klerk made his Springbok debut against Ireland in June 2016, starting all three Tests of a series victory, and went on to develop into one of the most combative and tactically astute scrum-halves in world rugby, renowned for his box-kicking and defensive ferocity relative to his smaller stature. He moved to England's Sale Sharks in 2017, becoming a key player in the Premiership.
