Daniel Johannes "Duane" Vermeulen was born on 3 July 1986 in Nelspruit, South Africa, and attended Hoërskool Nelspruit. His father died of cancer when Vermeulen was just 10 or 11 years old, a formative loss that shaped his determined, resilient character both on and off the pitch. Vermeulen began his professional career with the Pumas in 2005, before moving through the Free State Cheetahs and Western Province's Stormers, developing into one of the most physically dominant number eights in world rugby. Nicknamed "Thor" and "The Bone Collector" for his imposing strength and anticipation under the high ball, he made his Springbok debut against Australia in 2012. Vermeulen spent three seasons with French club Toulon before a spell in Japan with Kubota Spears, and was recalled to prominence with South Africa's triumphant 2019 Rugby World Cup campaign, being named Man of the Match in the final against England for his dominant, tone-setting performance. He went on to add a second World Cup winner's medal in 2023, his final Test coming in that year's final. Vermeulen earned 76 Test caps for South Africa between 2012 and 2023, and is widely regarded as one of the finest number eights in Springbok history. After retiring, he moved into a coaching role with SA Rugby, continuing to shape the next generation of South African forwards.
