Eben Etzebeth was born on 29 October 1991 in Cape Town, South Africa, and attended Hoërskool Tygerberg in Parow, where his growth spurt came relatively late in his teenage years — at under-16 level he played in the backs and competed as a high jumper for Northern Suburbs Schools, athletic experience that later proved valuable for lineout timing. By Grade 11, he had grown into the towering frame that would define his career, representing Western Province at the prestigious Craven Week tournament.
