Desmond Michael Bane was born on 25 June 1998, and moved frequently with his mother, Marissa, and sister until age two, when he settled in Richmond, Indiana, to live with his great-grandparents, who coached him in youth baseball before he transitioned fully to basketball by eighth grade. At 13, he learned that his biological father, Etieno Ekiko, lived in Nigeria, a detail that added complexity to his early family life. Bane starred at Seton Catholic High School in Richmond before playing four seasons at TCU, where he helped the Horned Frogs win the 2017 NIT championship and earned first-team All-Big 12 honours as a senior, with his jersey later retired by the program.
