American NASCAR Cup Series driver known for winning three Daytona 500s and consistently competing at the highest level with multiple championship contenders.
James Dennis Alan Hamlin was born on 18 November 1980 in Tampa, Florida, and spent most of his childhood in Chesterfield Court House, Virginia, beginning his racing career in go-karts at just seven years old in 1988, winning the WKA Manufacturers Cup by 15. Hamlin progressed through mini stocks and Late Model Stock Cars, winning 25 races and 30 poles across 36 starts in 2003, before earning his NASCAR Cup Series debut in 2005 with Joe Gibbs Racing, winning Rookie of the Year in 2006 after finishing third in the championship standings. Hamlin has won the Daytona 500 three times, in 2016, 2019, and 2020, and holds NASCAR records for most wins at both Pocono Raceway and Kansas Speedway, ranking tenth on the sport's all-time wins list despite never having won a Cup Series championship, finishing runner-up on two occasions, in 2010 and 2025. Hamlin has continued competing at the highest level for Joe Gibbs Racing across more than two decades, also co-owning 23XI Racing alongside basketball legend Michael Jordan, and remains one of the most statistically accomplished active drivers in the sport.
