Jimmie Kenneth Johnson was born on 17 September 1975 in El Cajon, California, and began racing motorcycles at just four years old, winning a national off-road championship by age eight and becoming nationally ranked in off-road racing during his early teens. Johnson transitioned to stock cars and trucks after catching the attention of a manufacturer scout at 15, and joined NASCAR's Cup Series in 2001 driving the No. 48 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, a partnership that would define the rest of his career. Johnson won seven NASCAR Cup Series championships, tying Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt for the most in the sport's history, including a remarkable run of five consecutive titles from 2006 to 2010. He clinched his seventh and final championship in 2016 by winning the season finale at Homestead after starting the race at the back of the field due to a pre-race inspection issue. Johnson retired from full-time competition after the 2020 season, finishing with 83 Cup Series wins, tied for sixth on the all-time list, and two Daytona 500 victories. He has continued competing part-time, including as the 2022 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year, and became majority owner of Legacy Motor Club in 2023, making his 700th career Cup start in 2025.
