Ashleigh Brazill was born on 29 December 1989 in Campbelltown, New South Wales, and built one of the more unusual careers in Australian sport as a genuine dual-code athlete, playing netball and AFL Women's football professionally and concurrently for the Collingwood Magpies — the only Australian athlete to hold contracts in both codes for the same club at once. She spent 12 years on elite netball rosters, including NSW Swifts, West Coast Fever, Melbourne Vixens and Collingwood, without ever earning Diamonds selection. That changed in 2022, when — after sitting out that year's AFLW season to focus on netball, and having twice been overlooked for World Cup squads in 2015 and 2019 — Brazill, then 32, was finally selected for the Australian Diamonds and made her international debut at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, winning gold in her first major tournament. She earned a first World Cup call-up the following year and helped Australia win the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town, playing every minute of the final, before retiring from elite netball to return full-time to AFLW, where she went on to play for the Fremantle Football Club.
