Andrei Igorevich Svechnikov was born on 26 March 2000 in Barnaul, Siberia, Russia, and his family relocated twice, first to the Moscow area and then Kazan, to access better hockey teams and coaching for both Andrei and his older brother, Evgeny, who was himself drafted in the first round by the Detroit Red Wings in 2015. Svechnikov moved to North America to play for the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the USHL, being named the league's Rookie of the Year, before joining the Barrie Colts of the OHL as the first overall pick in the 2017 CHL Import Draft. The Carolina Hurricanes selected Svechnikov second overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, and he made history in just his second career game, becoming the first player born in the 2000s to score an NHL goal. Svechnikov has continued to develop into one of Carolina's most important offensive weapons, renowned for his skill and physical style of play, and remains one of the most talented Russian-born wingers to enter the league in recent years.
