Yaroslava Mahuchikh

High jump world record holder (2.10m), 2024 Olympic champion.

Yaroslava Oleksiivna Mahuchikh was born on 19 September 2001 in Dnipro, Ukraine, to Olha, a former gymnast, and Oleksiy, a former canoeist, and began competing in sports at seven, initially taking up karate before following her older sister into athletics. Mahuchikh won bronze in the high jump at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and was forced to flee her hometown of Dnipro shortly after Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, continuing her career while training abroad and closely following news from the war. Mahuchikh delivered a historic performance in July 2024, clearing 2.10 metres at a Diamond League meeting in Paris to break Stefka Kostadinova's 37-year-old world record, becoming the first woman ever to clear that height. Mahuchikh won Olympic gold at the 2024 Paris Games weeks later, and has used her platform throughout the war to advocate for her country, donating auction proceeds from her Olympic competition bib to military rebuilding efforts and wearing blue and yellow eyeliner in competition as a tribute to the Ukrainian flag, remaining one of the most prominent athletic symbols of Ukrainian resilience.
