Wojciech Fortuna was a Polish ski jumper who won the 1972 Olympic large hill gold medal in one of the biggest surprises in the sport's history, Poland's first-ever Winter Olympic gold.
In 1972, at the Sapporo Winter Olympics, Wojciech Fortuna arrived as a 19-year-old outsider from Zakopane and left as an Olympic champion, his 111-metre first jump on the large hill launching one of the great upsets in Winter Olympic history and giving Poland its first-ever gold medal at the Winter Games. He joined the national team in the early 1970s, and a strong jump of 105.5 metres in a pre-Olympic trial earned him a last-minute selection for the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics, where he arrived as a virtual unknown, aged just 19. Competing on the Okurayama large hill against a field including heavily favoured Japanese jumpers, Fortuna produced the leap of his life in the first round: a wind-aided 111-metre jump that set a new hill record and overran the safety zone, prompting officials to briefly discuss a re-start before allowing the result to stand. His second jump was more modest at 87.5 metres, but it was enough to hold off East Germany's Manfred Wolf and the field of Japanese favourites, none of whom could match his first-round distance. Fortuna's victory, described by observers as one of the greatest surprises in ski jumping history, gave Poland its first-ever Winter Olympic gold medal — a feat not repeated until Kamil Stoch's triumphs at Sochi 2014. Fortuna competed through the 1970s but never matched his Sapporo heights again, retiring in 1979. He was honoured with Poland's Gold Cross of Merit and the Order of Polonia Restituta for his historic achievement.
