Vangipurapu Venkata Sai Laxman was born on 1 November 1974 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh (now Telangana), India, into a family of doctors, and chose the cricket bat over medicine despite the family tradition, going on to become one of India's most elegant and celebrated Test batters. Laxman made his Test debut against South Africa in 1996, and delivered the defining innings of his career in 2001, scoring 281 against Australia at Eden Gardens to help India complete one of the greatest comebacks in Test history after following on, a knock that remains one of the most celebrated in the sport. Laxman, nicknamed "Very Very Special," scored over 1,200 runs at Eden Gardens alone, the only Indian to average over 100 at a single ground, and was part of the Indian team that shared the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy title with Sri Lanka. Laxman retired from international cricket in 2012, and has since become Head of Cricket at India's National Cricket Academy and head coach of the India Under-19 and India A teams, remaining a respected voice in Indian cricket as a commentator and administrator.
