Vítor Manuel Martins Baía was born on 15 October 1969 in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, and joined Porto's youth academy at 13 after starting out at local club Leça. He made his first-team debut for Porto in the late 1980s, quickly establishing himself as one of the finest goalkeepers of his generation and becoming synonymous with the club for the remainder of his career. Baía spent eight seasons in his first spell at Porto, winning numerous domestic titles, before a move to Barcelona in 1996 brought two seasons in Spain, where he won the Copa del Rey twice, the Spanish Super Cup, and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. He returned to Porto in 1999, closing out the rest of his career with the club he first joined as a teenager. Baía's second spell at Porto coincided with the club's greatest period of success under manager José Mourinho, winning the UEFA Cup in 2003 and the Champions League in 2004, cementing his status as one of the most decorated goalkeepers in the club's history, with 26 major titles won across his two spells. Baía earned dozens of caps for Portugal, representing his country at two European Championships and the 2002 World Cup. After retiring in 2007, he remained closely connected to Porto in an ambassadorial role, continuing to represent the club that defined his entire professional life.
