Fernando Manuel Silva Couto was born in Portugal and rose through the ranks to become one of the finest defenders of his generation, renowned for his combative style, aerial dominance, and distinctive shoulder-length hair, which made him instantly recognisable on the pitch. He captained the Portugal national team for much of his international career and represented his country at multiple major tournaments, becoming a cornerstone of Portugal's defensive line through the 1990s and early 2000s.
