Trayvon Jaquez Bromell was born on 10 July 1995 in St. Petersburg, Florida, and grew up on the city's south side amid poverty and gang violence; his best friend ended up in prison, and Bromell has spoken candidly about carrying lasting scars from the things he witnessed as a child, crediting athletics with saving his life. Bromell became the first high school junior to break the 10-second barrier in the 100m, running 9.97 seconds while at Gibbs High School, before winning the NCAA 100m title as a freshman at Baylor University and turning professional in 2015. Bromell won bronze in the 100m at the 2015 World Championships at just 20, and gold in the 60m at the 2016 World Indoor Championships, before a heel injury in 2016 required two surgeries and wiped out nearly three full seasons of his career. Bromell made a remarkable comeback, running 9.90 seconds in 2020 despite the disrupted pandemic season, and added a second 100m World Championship bronze in 2022, remaining one of the fastest and most resilient sprinters of his generation.
