Anthony David Gonzalez was born on 27 February 1976 in Torrance, California, and starred at Huntington Beach High School before playing college football and basketball at the University of California, Berkeley, earning consensus All-American honours in football in 1996. The Kansas City Chiefs selected Gonzalez in the first round, 13th overall, of the 1997 NFL Draft, and he developed into the most productive tight end in NFL history, spending his first 12 seasons with Kansas City before finishing his career with the Atlanta Falcons. Gonzalez retired holding the NFL records for most career receptions and receiving yards by a tight end, with 1,325 catches for 15,127 yards and 111 touchdowns, and earned 14 Pro Bowl selections and six first-team All-Pro honours across his 17-season career. Gonzalez was named to the NFL's 2000s All-Decade Team and the 100th Anniversary All-Time Team, and has since built a respected career as a football broadcaster, remembered as the player who fundamentally redefined the tight end position as a dominant receiving threat.
