Stephen Andrew Bould was born on 16 November 1962 in Stoke-on-Trent, England, and joined his hometown club Stoke City's youth setup in 1978, turning professional two years later. He developed into one of English football's most coveted young centre-backs over seven seasons at Stoke, including a loan spell at Torquay United, before Arsenal signed him in 1988 for £390,000, following his Stoke teammate Lee Dixon to Highbury. Bould formed a formidable partnership with Dixon, Tony Adams, and Nigel Winterburn in Arsenal's celebrated back four throughout the 1990s, renowned for organisation, aerial strength, and defensive discipline. He scored Arsenal's first-ever Premier League goal in August 1992, and helped the club win league titles in 1988-89 and 1990-91, the FA Cup and League Cup in 1993, and the 1994 European Cup Winners' Cup. Bould was initially limited to a backup role behind Martin Keown following Arsène Wenger's arrival in 1996, but the Frenchman's innovative training and nutrition methods extended his career, and Bould became a key veteran presence in the club's 1997-98 double-winning season. He left Arsenal in 1999 to captain Sunderland, closing out his playing career there. Bould moved into coaching immediately after retiring, working extensively with Arsenal's academy as head youth team coach before being promoted to assistant manager in 2012, a role in which he supported multiple first-team managers for over a decade before later taking charge of Belgian club Lommel and then joining Queens Park Rangers as first-team coach.
