Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill is an Indian top-order batsman who has captained India in Test and ODI cricket, known for his elegant stroke play across formats.

Shubman Gill was born on 8 September 1999 in Fazilka, Punjab, India, into a Jatt Sikh family, and his father, Lakhwinder Singh, a farmer who had once aspired to become a cricketer himself, transformed part of the family farm into a cricket pitch to nurture his son's talent. Gill was named Player of the Tournament at the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup as India's vice-captain, and made his ODI debut for India in 2019 before his Test debut the following year, developing into one of the most technically gifted top-order batters of his generation. Gill became, as of February 2026, the fastest male batter in history to reach 2,000 ODI runs, and was appointed captain of India's Test and ODI teams in 2025, breaking a 49-year-old record held by Sunil Gavaskar to become the youngest player to captain India in a home Test series. Gill captains the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, leading the team to the playoffs, and has also voiced the Mumbai-based Spider-Man character in Hindi and Punjabi dubs of a major animated film, remaining one of the most complete and marketable young batters in world cricket.

Gill is known for his classical batting technique with elegant stroke play through the off-side. He possesses excellent timing and placement, particularly strong in his cover drives and cuts. His compact technique and ability to play both pace and spin bowling effectively make him adaptable across different conditions and formats.

Gill represents the new generation of Indian cricket, combining traditional technique with modern aggressive intent to establish himself as a future cornerstone of the national team.
