The world's number one Test bowler — the most unplayable fast bowler of the modern era.
Jasprit Jasbirsingh Bumrah was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India in 1993. His father died when he was five — his mother Daljit raised him and his sister. He was rejected by multiple state cricket associations before being signed by Mumbai Indians in the IPL in 2013. His unusual bowling action — a slingy, chest-on delivery that produces late movement and awkward angles — is effectively impossible to replicate in net practice, giving batsmen little preparation for facing him. He made his Test debut in 2018 aged 24 — later than most elite fast bowlers — and immediately established himself as India's most dangerous bowling weapon. His Test bowling average of 19.6 is among the finest by any fast bowler in the modern era. He reached the ICC Test bowling number one ranking in 2023. He was India's most important player in his 2024 T20 World Cup victory. His ability to bowl yorkers in the final overs of T20 matches, reverse swing in the middle overs of Tests and his unorthodox action across formats make him the most versatile fast bowler of his generation. He played through persistent back stress fractures that required surgery — returning each time at the same level.
