Sébastien Loeb was born on 26 February 1974 in Haguenau, Alsace, France, and was originally a competitive gymnast, winning four regional championships before turning his attention to motorsport in the mid-1990s. Loeb won the Junior World Rally Championship title in 2001, earning promotion to Citroën's factory team, and secured his maiden WRC victory at Rallye Deutschland in 2002, finishing runner-up in that year's championship by a single point to Petter Solberg. Loeb began an unprecedented run of dominance in 2004, matching the record for most wins in a single season with six victories to claim his first world title, and went on to win nine consecutive World Rally Championships from 2004 to 2012 alongside co-driver Daniel Elena — a run of sustained excellence unmatched in the sport's history, equalled only decades later by Sébastien Ogier in 2025. Loeb holds the all-time WRC records for rally wins, podium finishes, and stage victories, and stepped back from full-time competition in 2013, making occasional appearances thereafter, including a stunning comeback victory at Rally Catalunya in 2018 at age 44.
