Saúl Ñíguez Esclápez was born on 21 November 1994 in Elche, Spain, to José Antonio Ñíguez, a former striker for Elche CF, and Pilar Esclápez. Football ran throughout the family — both of his brothers, Aarón and Jonathan, also became professional footballers. His father enrolled him at Elche's academy before Real Madrid signed him in 2006, though he faced bullying there that prompted a move to cross-city rivals Atlético Madrid in 2008. Saúl progressed through Atlético's youth system and made his first-team debut in 2012, developing into one of the most versatile midfielders in Spanish football, capable of playing across multiple midfield positions under manager Diego Simeone. He signed a nine-year contract extension with the club in 2017, reflecting his standing as a core part of Atlético's identity.
