Sarah Fuller was born and grew up playing soccer, becoming the starting goalkeeper on Vanderbilt University's SEC championship-winning women's soccer team before making sporting history in November 2020. With Vanderbilt's football team facing a shortage of specialists due to COVID-19 protocols, Fuller joined the football programme on short notice, and on 28 November 2020 became the first woman ever to play in a Power Five conference football game, kicking off to start the second half against Missouri. Fuller wore the phrase "Play Like A Girl" on the back of her helmet, and her historic appearance drew national attention as a milestone moment for women's participation in college football at its highest level, following earlier trailblazers including Katie Hnida and April Goss. Fuller went on to make two extra points for Vanderbilt in a subsequent game, becoming the first woman to score in a Power Five football game, and has remained an inspirational figure for young female athletes, encouraging them that "you can do anything you set your mind to."
