Sandra Edge (née Mallett) was born on 26 August 1962 in Te Puia Springs on New Zealand's East Coast, into a sporting family — her brother Thomas played for the All Whites and her sister Margaret for the Black Sticks hockey team. She was educated at Tokomaru Bay School before boarding at Iona College in Havelock North and finishing at Lytton High School in Gisborne, captaining the New Zealand under-21 side in 1982 at just 17. Edge made her Silver Ferns debut against Australia in Melbourne in 1985 and went on to win 89 Test caps across a decade in the black dress, representing the provinces of Poverty Bay, Wellington, Waikato, Southland and Auckland along the way. A gifted centre rated the best in the world in her position, she was part of the New Zealand side that won the 1987 World Championship under captain Leigh Gibbs, added a silver medal in 1991, then was named the Silver Ferns' 17th captain in 1994. She led the team through 21 Tests, including the 1995 World Championship in Birmingham, where New Zealand beat England and South Africa on the way to a third-place finish. Edge retired later that year and was made an MBE for services to netball; in 1999 she was named centre of Netball New Zealand's 75th-anniversary 'Dream Team'. She later returned to the sport as a coach, and Netball New Zealand named its Silver Ferns player-of-the-year award the Sandra Edge Medal in her honour.
