Samuel Gregory Underhill was born on 22 July 1996 in Dayton, Ohio, United States, while his father was serving overseas in the Royal Air Force, and the family moved back to England when he was just one year old. Raised in Peterborough and later Gloucestershire, he attended Sir Thomas Rich's School and played for Longlevens RFC before joining Gloucester's academy. Underhill made his senior Gloucester debut at just 17, before moving to Wales's Ospreys and then Bath in 2017, developing into one of the most physically fearless and technically sound flankers in world rugby, renowned for his low, chop-tackling technique that became one of the most feared defensive weapons in the northern hemisphere game.
