Phil Bennett was a mercurial Welsh fly-half central to Wales's dominant 1970s teams and captained the British & Irish Lions in 1977.
Philip "Phil" Bennett OBE was born on 24 October 1948 in Felinfoel, Carmarthenshire, Wales, the son of Les, a steelworker, and Mary, who worked at a car-pressing plant. Often ill as a child, Bennett was told by doctors that he would never have the physique to play rugby, and was even offered a trial by West Ham United as a footballer as a teenager while working in the local steelworks. Bennett defied those early medical warnings to become one of the most gifted and elusive fly-halves in the history of Welsh rugby, spending his entire club career with Llanelli RFC, whom he captained. His sidestepping and evasive running style made him one of the most exciting players of the golden era of 1970s Welsh rugby. Bennett earned 29 caps for Wales between 1969 and 1978, captaining the national side and helping deliver multiple Five Nations titles. His individual try for Wales against Scotland in 1977, launched from deep inside his own half with a dazzling series of sidesteps, was voted the greatest try in Welsh rugby history in 2020. Bennett toured with the British Lions in 1974 and 1977, captaining the tourists on the latter tour to New Zealand. He was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2015, and served as president of his hometown club, Felinfoel RFC, until his death on 12 June 2022, at age 73, in the same Welsh town where he was born.
