Papiss Demba Cissé was born on 3 June 1985 in Dakar, Senegal, and began his career with local side AS Douanes before moving to France to join Metz in 2004, with loan spells at Cherbourg and Châteauroux to gain further experience in the lower divisions. His clinical finishing eventually earned him a move to Germany's SC Freiburg in 2010. Cissé enjoyed a spectacular debut season in the Bundesliga, scoring 22 goals in the 2010-11 campaign — at the time a record for the most goals scored by an African player in a single Bundesliga season. His prolific form prompted Newcastle United to sign him for an estimated £9.3 million in 2012, reuniting him with fellow Senegalese international Demba Ba. Cissé became a fan favourite at Newcastle, renowned for his spectacular strikes, including a memorable overhead volley against Chelsea in 2012 that was voted the Premier League's Goal of the Season. He spent four seasons on Tyneside before moving to China's Shandong Luneng, and later played in Turkey for Alanyaspor, Fenerbahçe, and Çaykur Rizespor. Cissé earned dozens of caps for Senegal, representing his country at the 2012 and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, before retiring from the professional game and later turning out for a veterans' league side in England.
