Kalidou Koulibaly was born on 20 June 1991 in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, a town in northeastern France, to Senegalese parents. His father, Dabele, had emigrated from Senegal to France in the 1970s, working first at a peanut factory in Paris before moving to the Vosges region to work at a sawmill, while his mother worked as a cleaner to help support the family's three sons. Koulibaly began his career with amateur hometown club SR Saint-Dié before joining Metz, making his professional debut in 2010 and captaining the side at just 20 years old. His performances earned selection for France's under-20 squad at the 2011 World Cup, alongside future stars Antoine Griezmann and Alexandre Lacazette, but a senior France call-up never materialised, and Koulibaly ultimately chose to represent Senegal, his parents' homeland. A move to Belgium's Genk in 2012 saw Koulibaly win the Belgian Cup and gain his first European experience, before Napoli signed him in 2014. Over eight seasons in Naples, he developed into one of the finest centre-backs in world football, nicknamed "K2" and "The Wall" for his commanding physical presence and positional intelligence, winning the Coppa Italia in 2020.
