Oliver Rolf Kahn was born on 15 June 1969 in Karlsruhe, West Germany, and joined the youth ranks of Karlsruher SC at just six years old — the same club his father, Rolf, had played for in the early 1960s. Kahn began as an outfield player before switching to goalkeeper, and progressed through Karlsruher's system until making his Bundesliga debut for the first team in November 1987, initially as understudy to Alexander Famulla before finally winning the starting role in 1990. Kahn's outstanding performances for Karlsruher SC, including a run to the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 1993 that included a memorable win over Valencia, attracted the attention of Bayern Munich, who signed him in 1994. He spent the remainder of his career at Bayern, becoming one of the most feared and imposing goalkeepers in world football — renowned for his physical presence, ferocious will to win, and near-total command of his penalty area, which earned him the nickname "Der Titan." Over 14 seasons at Bayern Munich, Kahn won eight Bundesliga titles, six German Cups, and the UEFA Champions League in 2001, when his penalty-shootout heroics against Valencia delivered the trophy. His performances at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, where he almost single-handedly carried Germany to the final, earned him the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player — the first and, to date, only goalkeeper ever to receive the honour. Kahn made 86 appearances for Germany across a 12-year international career and retired from playing in 2008.
