Norma Plummer

Australian defender and coach who represented Australia as a player and later coached the Diamonds to world titles.

Norma Plummer was born on 24 November 1944 in Carlton, Victoria, and first represented Victoria in open competition in 1967. She was selected for the Australian squad in 1972 and spent a decade in the green and gold, captaining the national side in four of her 16 Tests and winning the 1975 World Championship in Auckland — an achievement that came to define her early reputation in the sport. Plummer moved into coaching almost by accident, taken aback when Victoria offered her a playing-coach role for the 1977 national championships; Victoria won three straight titles under her, two with Plummer still on court. She built a formidable domestic coaching career through the 1990s and 2000s — leading the Melbourne Phoenix to the inaugural Commonwealth Bank Trophy title in 1997 and running the Australian Institute of Sport's netball program from 1999 to 2003 — before being appointed head coach of the Australian Diamonds in 2003. Over eight years in charge she won 67 of 89 Tests, a 75 per cent success rate, and led Australia to World Cup titles in 2007 and 2011. After Australia she coached West Coast Fever (2012–2014) and then took charge of South Africa's Spar Proteas, holding the role from 2015 to 2019 and again from 2022 ahead of the 2023 World Cup on home soil. She was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for services to netball and was inducted into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame, later receiving Legend status — the sport's highest individual honour in Australia.
