Nicolás Hernán Gonzalo Otamendi was born on 12 February 1988 in El Talar, a neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and split his early athletic pursuits between boxing and football, building physical strength in a local gym alongside his cousin before committing fully to football with Vélez Sarsfield's youth academy. Otamendi made his first-team debut for Vélez in 2008, and his combination of physical power and composure in possession earned a call-up from national team coach Diego Maradona within a year, despite having played only a handful of professional matches. He moved to Portugal's Porto in 2010, where he developed into one of the finest centre-backs in the Primeira Liga, before Valencia signed him in 2014, earning a place in that season's La Liga Team of the Year. Manchester City signed Otamendi in 2015, and he spent five seasons as a key defensive figure under Pep Guardiola, winning multiple Premier League titles and being named to the PFA Team of the Year in 2018. He later moved to Benfica in 2020, spending six seasons in Portugal before returning to Argentina with River Plate.
