Nicolas Devir Claxton was born on 17 April 1999 in Greenville, South Carolina, and holds dual American and U.S. Virgin Islander nationality. He attended Legacy Charter School, where in his senior season he averaged 17.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks per game, becoming just the fourth player in school history to reach 1,000 career points, before committing to the University of Georgia over offers from Baylor and Florida State. Claxton played two seasons at Georgia, earning second-team All-SEC recognition, before the Brooklyn Nets selected him in the second round of the 2019 NBA Draft, spending his rookie season primarily with the team's G League affiliate as he continued to develop. Claxton has emerged as one of the league's premier rim protectors, using his length and mobility to become an elite shot-blocker and lob-catching finisher, establishing himself as Brooklyn's defensive anchor at centre across a rebuilding period for the franchise. Claxton has continued to be one of the Nets' most important defensive players, renowned for his ability to switch onto smaller, quicker opponents on the perimeter while still protecting the rim, a rare defensive versatility for a player of his size.
