Martin Dahlin is a Swedish former striker considered one of the finest forwards of his generation, who was Sweden's joint-top scorer as the team finished third at the 1994 World Cup.
Martin Dahlin scored four goals at the 1994 World Cup in the United States as Sweden reached the semi-finals, was named Sweden's Guldbollen winner as the country's best footballer in 1993, and across six seasons at Borussia Mönchengladbach became the Bundesliga's most celebrated foreign striker of his era — voted the best in his position by Kicker magazine. He began his senior career at Malmö FF in 1987, and was the Allsvenskan's top scorer in 1988 as the club won the Swedish championship, before moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach in Germany in 1991. Dahlin became one of the Bundesliga's most feared strikers over six seasons at Mönchengladbach, scoring 50 league goals and being voted Kicker magazine's Best Foreign Striker, while helping the club win the DFB-Pokal in 1995 alongside teammate Stefan Effenberg. He was named Sweden's Guldbollen winner as the country's best footballer in 1993, following a run that included helping Sweden reach the semifinals of UEFA Euro 1992 on home soil. Dahlin's greatest tournament came at the 1994 World Cup in the United States, where he scored four goals — including a crucial contribution to Sweden's run to the semifinals, their best finish since 1958 — finishing among the tournament's top scorers. He went on to play for AS Roma and Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League, before a serious training injury and subsequent back problems led to his retirement in 1999 following a final season at Hamburger SV. He earned 60 caps and scored 29 goals for Sweden between 1991 and 1997.
