Karl Fredrik Ljungberg was born on 16 April 1977 in Vittsjö, in southern Sweden, to Roy, who owned a construction business, and Elisabeth, who worked for the Swedish Labor Department. The family moved to Halmstad when Freddie was five, and he joined the youth ranks of local club Halmstads BK, where his coach quickly recognised both his talent and his generous, team-first attitude on the pitch, despite also excelling at ice hockey and handball as a boy. Ljungberg made his senior debut for Halmstad in 1994 and helped the club win the Swedish Cup and league title before Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger, reportedly having only seen him play once on television against England, signed him in 1998 for a Swedish transfer record. The move proved inspired: Ljungberg's pace, direct dribbling, and eye for a big-occasion goal made him a key figure in one of the most celebrated periods in Arsenal's history. Ljungberg became the first player to score in consecutive FA Cup finals, in 2001 and 2002, and was a vital part of Arsenal's "Invincibles" squad that went unbeaten through the entire 2003-04 Premier League season. Over nine seasons at Arsenal, he won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups, and captained the club in the latter part of his tenure, also becoming Sweden's national team captain and being named the country's Footballer of the Year twice. After leaving Arsenal in 2007, Ljungberg played across three continents, with spells at West Ham United, Seattle Sounders, Chicago Fire, Celtic, Japan's Shimizu S-Pulse, and finally Mumbai City in India, where he came out of retirement in 2014.
