The finest single sculler of his generation — two Olympic gold medals and five World Championship titles.
Mahe Drysdale was born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1978. He won the Olympic single sculls gold medal at London 2012 and Rio 2016. He won five World Championship titles in the single sculls. He rowed the 2012 Olympics final while managing a severe respiratory illness contracted in the days before the race. His technical efficiency in the single scull — stroke rate, catch timing and the power application through the drive — is analysed by rowing coaches as near-perfect. He retired after Rio 2016. He was named New Zealand Athlete of the Year multiple times.
