Lucas Vázquez Iglesias was born on 1 July 1991 in Curtis, a small village in the Galicia region of northwestern Spain, to parents Carmen Iglesias and Tino Vázquez, both devoted supporters of Real Madrid despite the family's proximity to fierce regional rival Deportivo La Coruña. He spent his earliest years playing football constantly with his brother Mateo, often turning his uncle's restaurant dining room into an imagined Real Madrid pitch. Vázquez began his youth career at local club CD Curtis before moving to Ural CF in nearby A Coruña, where he scored 50 goals in his first year and was promoted to compete against players three years his senior. His performances at 16 attracted Real Madrid's famed academy, La Fábrica, and he joined the club in 2007, beginning an association that would define the rest of his career. After a loan season at Espanyol in 2014-15, where he made his La Liga debut, Vázquez broke into Real Madrid's first team in 2015 and spent the following decade as one of the club's most reliable and versatile squad players, capable of filling in at right-back or right wing with equal effectiveness. Over more than 400 appearances, he won five Champions League titles, four La Liga championships, and 23 major trophies in total — a collection matched by very few players in the club's storied history. Vázquez earned caps for Spain at Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup, and left Real Madrid as a free agent in 2025 to join Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen, bringing to a close an 18-year association with the club he had supported since childhood.
