Kevin Kampl is a Slovenian footballer known for his tireless work rate and tactical intelligence, who spent nearly a decade as a key midfielder for RB Leipzig after winning domestic doubles at Red Bull Salzburg.
Kevin Kampl chose to represent Slovenia rather than Germany despite growing up in Solingen and joining Bayer Leverkusen's academy at four, going on to win back-to-back DFB-Pokal titles with RB Leipzig in 2022 and 2023 after nearly a decade as one of the Bundesliga's most reliable midfielders. He joined Bayer Leverkusen's academy at four years old, winning the German U19 Cup in 2007-08, before loan spells at Greuther Fürth, VfL Osnabrück, and VfR Aalen helped him gain first-team experience in Germany's lower divisions. Kampl's career breakthrough came at Red Bull Salzburg from 2012 to 2014, where he helped the club win the Austrian Bundesliga and Cup double in back-to-back seasons and was nominated for Austrian Bundesliga Player of the Year. He returned to Germany with Borussia Dortmund in 2015, before a swift move back to Bayer Leverkusen, and joined RB Leipzig in 2017 for a €20 million fee. Kampl became a defining presence in RB Leipzig's midfield for nearly a decade, renowned for his relentless work rate, precise passing, and tactical versatility across both defensive and attacking midfield roles. He won the DFB-Pokal with the club in both 2022 and 2023, and the DFL-Supercup in 2023. Despite being eligible for Germany, Kampl chose to represent Slovenia at every level from under-20 through to the senior national team, earning 28 caps between 2012 and 2018, having decided early in his career to honour his family's heritage.
