Jan Oblak was born on 7 January 1993 in Škofja Loka, a medieval town in Slovenia, and began playing for his local club, Ločan, at just five years old before joining the youth academy that would become Olimpija Ljubljana at ten. His talent was so obvious that goalkeeping coach Robert Volk gave up his own place in training sessions to make way for the teenage Oblak, reportedly telling stunned club staff, "this kid is better than me." Oblak made his professional debut for Olimpija Ljubljana at just 16, turning down an offer from Italian club Empoli to continue his development at home before Portuguese giants Benfica signed him in 2010. He spent four seasons in Portugal, gaining experience through a series of loan spells at smaller clubs before establishing himself as Benfica's first-choice goalkeeper. Atlético Madrid signed Oblak in 2014, and he quickly developed into arguably the finest goalkeeper of his generation, renowned for his shot-stopping reflexes, positioning, and remarkable consistency across more than a decade at the club. He has won the Zamora Trophy, awarded to La Liga's goalkeeper with the best goals-against ratio, a record nine times, along with a La Liga title and multiple domestic cups with Atlético. Oblak has been named Slovenian Footballer of the Year on nine occasions, an extraordinary run of domestic recognition, and represented his country at UEFA Euro 2024. He was also made an honorary citizen of his hometown, Škofja Loka, which he has credited as an idyllic place to have grown up and still returns to fondly whenever his schedule allows.
