Keke Rosberg is a Finnish former racing driver who became Finland's first Formula 1 World Champion in 1982, remarkably winning the title with just a single race victory, and is the father of 2016 champion Nico Rosberg.
Keke Rosberg won the 1982 Formula 1 World Championship with Williams by scoring just a single Grand Prix victory — the Swiss Grand Prix at Dijon — making him the first driver to claim the title with only one win since 1958, and Finland's first-ever Formula 1 World Champion. He began racing karts, won the Finnish Formula Vee championship in 1973, and progressed through Formula Super Vee and European Formula Two before making a late Formula One debut at 29 with Theodore at the 1978 South African Grand Prix. Rosberg struggled to find a competitive drive through his early F1 years with Theodore, ATS, Wolf, and Fittipaldi, but his move to Williams in 1982 transformed his career. In one of the most turbulent seasons in the sport's history, Rosberg won just a single Grand Prix, the Swiss Grand Prix at Dijon, yet his remarkable consistency amid chaos — including disqualifications, boycotts, and driver strikes — was enough to secure the World Championship, becoming Finland's first-ever F1 champion and the first driver to win the title with only one win since 1958. Rosberg went on to win the prestigious 1983 Monaco Grand Prix and later joined McLaren for 1986, his final F1 season, winning five Grands Prix in total across his nine-season career. He retired as an outspoken advocate for driver safety, and his campaigning contributed to major FIA safety reforms in the years that followed. After retiring, Rosberg became a successful team owner and manager, and mentored his son Nico Rosberg, who went on to win the 2016 Formula 1 World Championship, making them the second father-son pair to both become champions.
