Kazuto Ioka was born on 24 March 1989 in Sakai, Osaka, Japan, and asked his father, Kazunori Ioka, a former boxer, to teach him the sport as a teenager; his father would go on to train him throughout both his amateur and professional careers. He compiled an outstanding amateur record of 95 wins against 10 losses, winning six national high school tournaments, and studied at Tokyo Agricultural University while hoping to qualify for the 2008 Olympics, though he fell short in the qualifiers. Ioka turned professional shortly afterward and developed into one of the most decorated Japanese boxers in history, winning world titles across five different weight divisions from mini flyweight up to bantamweight — an extraordinary achievement given the significant size difference between those classes.
