Russian player known for his heavy groundstrokes who has reached multiple Grand Slam semifinals and an Olympic final.
Karen Abgarovich Khachanov was born on 21 May 1996 in Moscow, Russia, to Abgar, an Armenian from Yerevan who played volleyball before studying medicine, and Nataliya, a Russian who also studied medicine. Khachanov has spoken proudly of his Armenian heritage, tweeting that he always considers himself to have Armenian roots despite being born in Moscow. Khachanov began playing tennis at three, almost by accident, after his parents enrolled him in lessons available at his kindergarten, and he grew up idolising fellow Russian great Marat Safin. He turned professional in 2013 and developed into one of the most powerful hitters on tour, standing 1.98 metres tall. Khachanov reached a career-high ranking of world No. 8 in July 2019, and has reached the semi-finals of three different Grand Slam tournaments — the 2023 Australian Open, the 2022 US Open — along with multiple quarter-final appearances at the French Open and Wimbledon. He won a silver medal in singles at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, reaching the final. Khachanov continues to compete at the top level of men's tennis, renowned for his heavy groundstrokes and imposing physical presence, and remains one of the leading Russian players on the ATP Tour.
